  • Free laptop theft protection software is a great resource for personally-owned machines only.

    January 30, 2012

A recent Daily Bruin article on January 24, highlighted FrontDoorSoftware Security. FrontDoor Security Software is a client based tracking utility that can locate and remotely "lockdown" a laptop when lost or stolen. While we love to embrace new technology, especially any utility that increases security, the HDC board feels it important to inform our community this product should not be installed on university owned machines. As the UCLA Electronic Communications Policy dictates, units are not allowed to track department-owned staff and faculty machines because it violates the ECP. However, loaner laptops would have different guidelines, and campus security officials will be checking with Campus Council to see what the policy for those would be.

  • "10 Minutes" - PDP

    January 16, 2012

HDC is participating this Thursday afternoon, January 19, in a really great technology workshop, "Tech Tips in 10 Minutes".

The format is really fun; Campus IT professionals have 10 minutes to explain what a particular productivity tool does, give a brief tutorial, and show how to get started. Each tool will be demonstrated up to 6 times at each event. Attendees can pick a tool to learn about, gather around that "booth", see the demo for 10 minutes, and then go on to another booth and product.

We affectionately refer to these sessions as "speed dating" with productivity technology. This event will be exclusively for UCLA's Professional Development Program at The Wilshire Center. Our mission is to bring easy to learn and low-pressure tech tools to this elite group of UCLA Leaders and to help them make the most of their busy schedules.
